The IRTG is hosted by research groups from the Departments of Psychology and Neuroradiology at Saarland University, Saarbrücken, Germany, and from the Institute of Psychology from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, China. It aims at enhancing our understanding of learning and memory processes and their neural basis by examining how environmental constraints within and across cultures shape these processes and their underlying neural organisation. See www.adaptiveminds.de for further information.
The Department of Psychology at Saarland University and the Department of Neuroradiology will be the main research and teaching environments on the German side. The Department of Psychology is equipped with four high density EEG recoding laboratories, several behavioral and electrophysiological testing chambers, and state-of-the-art multimodal stimulus presentation software. Neurobiological and motivational aspects of perception of effort during physical tasks
Applications are invited for a 3-yr PhD studentship jointly funded by Bangor University, the School of Psychology (http://www.psychology.bangor.ac.uk/http://www.psychology.bangor.ac.uk/), and the School of Sport, Health & Exercise Sciences (http://www.shes.bangor.ac.uk/).

Increased perception of physical effort is a major feature of fatigue in a variety of somatic and mental diseases, and of fatigue during prolonged exercise. In spite of its importance, however, the neurobiological bases of perceived physical effort are poorly understood. One of the aims of the proposed doctoral research program is to investigate the neural correlates of perception of effort during physical tasks using functional MRI. The student will also perform behavioral and psychophysiological studies on its motivational aspects. The PhD project will consist of an associated but independent series of studies related to this work.
Applicants with an interest in multidisciplinary research and a Master’s degree in Psychology, Neuroscience, Sport Science, or a related field are preferred. Minimal requirement for application is a first or upper second class honours Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field. The studentship is for three years (PhD only) and provides fees and a maintenance grant. International students are welcome to apply, but funding is only available at the Home/EU level. Studentship offers may be subject to a successful Criminal Records Bureau check.
Applications should take the form of (1) a full academic CV, (2) a cover-letter stating research interests and how you might develop the research project, and (3) two letters of reference from appropriate academic referees relating directly to your application (with telephone numbers and emails for confirmation). These should be sent to:
